The Diablo Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo') is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. The purple-leaved Ninebark has small white flowers followed by pretty reddish fruit which show well against the foliage, and interesting peeling papery bark; extremely tough and durable. Ninebark is named for its exfoliating bark (on mature branches) which peels in strips to reveal several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark. Bark provides winter interest but is usually hidden by the foliage during the growing season. This Ninebark will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, prune as needed immediately after bloom and no later than mid-August. Plants may be cut close to the ground in winter to rejuvenate.
